Volunteers
Volunteers perform many vital functions at Readings for the Blind, and are essential to our organization. We’d love to talk to you about our volunteer positions - please call (248) 557-7776.
All volunteers must be over age 21, and live close enough to our office in Southfield, Michigan to attend trainings.
Volunteer opportunities include:
Volunteer narrator: Record textbooks, leisure reading, pamphlets, instructional booklets, religious material, etc. Record in your own home, using equipment loaned by Readings for the Blind.
Requirements: Must be able to record at least 4 hours per week. Must be able to attend multiple training sessions in our office in Southfield, MI. Must have basic computer skills, a good, strong voice, and a quiet place in your home to record. Attention to detail, willingness to look up unknown words in the dictionary. Willingness to record a wide variety of subject matter, including views that conflict with your own.
Data entry: Create labels for our CD and tape recordings using labeling software, create library cards, other assorted computer tasks.
Requirements: Basic computer skills. Must be available to work in our office in Southfield, MI., during our business hours (Monday – Wednesday 9-3, Thursday 9-12). Must be available on a weekly basis.
Duplicator: Duplicate all newly recorded material from the masters submitted by our volunteer readers, using high speed cassette and CD duplicators.

Librarian: The library contains more than 2,000 audio recordings. The librarian is responsible for making hard copy library cards, data entry regarding titles, filing the recordings alphabetically in the library, and tracking the recordings loaned to our clients.
Requirements: Must be available to work in our office in Southfield, MI., during our business hours (Monday – Wednesday 9-3, Thursday 9-12). Must be available on a weekly basis. Attention to detail is a necessity.
Board of Directors: The Board of Directors sets the direction for the organization by providing goals, objectives and recommendations. The Board meets quarterly.
Requirements: ability to attend quarterly meetings during our business hours. People with the following backgrounds especially needed: Business, education, legal, audio production, service to the visually impaired or learning disabled.
